Bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus)

Bladder wrack is a brown seaweed found in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is also known by the names Sea kelp, Brown kelp seaweed, Sea wrack, Marine oak, Fucus, Kelp-Ware, Black-Tang, Quercus marina, Cutweed, Bladder Fucus, Fucus (Varech) vesiculeux, Blasentang, Seetang, Meeriche, rockweed, bladder fucus, sea oak, black tany, cut weed, dyers fucus, red fucus, and rock wrack.


The nutrients contained by Bladder wrack include selenium, zinc, calcium, iodine, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, iron, silicon, and B-vitamin complex. Furthermore, it also features small quantities of vitamins like C, A, E, G, S, and K. Studies revealed that it is also rich in mannitol, zeaxanthin, carotene, and possesses some traces of bromine. Bladder wrack also contains mucilage (soothing soluble fiber), and a number of essential minerals.


Polysaccharides in Bladder wrack possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antitumor, antithrombotic, anticoagulant and antioxidant bioactivities.
